LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Sunday marks Juneteenth which is the commemoration of the end of slavery. It became a federal holiday last year.

As more people are celebrating the day, some companies are trying to use it to make a profit.

Last month, Walmart removed a Juneteenth branded ice cream and issued an apology after facing backlash on social media.

The Juneteenth Foundation believes corporations should use the day to promote diversity and equality rather than products.

“Go out and buy black. Right, use this as a single, singular day to go out and support local Black businesses in the community. Us supporting each other is a critical component of it,” said Laquan Austion, Juneteenth Foundation.

The foundation said the best way to celebrate is to reflect on the holiday’s importance and invest in communities of color.
