LAS VEGAS (KLAS)— Police arrested a man in northern Nevada on multiple animal abuse-related charges after finding malnourished horses and kenneled dogs living in filthy conditions.

Jon Hickox was arrested on Jan. 4 by Elko County Sheriff’s Office deputies following a month-long investigation. Hickox faces nine counts of torturing, injuring, or abandonment of animals, according to ECSO.

In December, an anonymous report regarding neglected horses on Hickox’s property was sent to the sheriff’s office. Deputies who went to investigate discovered one dead horse and five others in “extremely poor condition,” the sheriff’s office reported.

The horses were neglected and had not had food or water for an extended period of time. Two of the horses were in such bad condition they were euthanized. The remaining three horses are under the care of a veterinarian.

Deputies also discovered three dogs in small wire kennels filled with feces and trash. The dogs had no access to water. They are also in the care of a veterinarian.
