LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A 35-year-old Las Vegas woman faces a DUI charge after a collision that killed a bicyclist early Tuesday on E. Sahara Avenue near Commercial Center Drive.
Sahara was closed to traffic for several hours following the crash.
Las Vegas Metropolitan police first reported the crash involved a pedestrian, but a news release later said the victim was a bicyclist. The victim, a male who hasn’t been identified by authorities, was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. His age was not released.
The crash was reported just after 4 a.m. and resulted in the closure of Sahara between Commercial Center Drive and just east of Maryland Parkway.
At the crash scene, a vehicle was flipped on its side.
Metro police said the bicyclist was riding northbound on Commercial Center when it collided with a Nissan Versa that was eastbound on Sahara. The Nissan had a red light, police said.
Jessica Saitta, 35, was arrested after showing signs of impairment, according to police. She was identified as the driver of the Nissan.
Saitta, a Las Vegas resident, was taken to the Clark County Detention Center. She was booked on charges of DUI resulting in death, reckless driving resulting in death and failure to observe a red traffic light. She is scheduled to make her initial court appearance Wednesday morning.
The bicyclist’s death marked the 6th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction. The collision remains under investigation.
