Woman previously convicted of felony DUI with 6 prior arrests, police say

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Police arrested a woman with six prior DUIs allegedly driving again under the influence in a rented car without a license, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained.

Richa Birdow, 44, faces charges of felony DUI and driving with a revoked license, documents said.

Birdow has six prior DUI arrests on her record, police said, including two felony DUI convictions in 2013 and 2017.

On Thursday, Feb. 1 around 3 a.m., a Las Vegas Metro police officer stopped Birdow while she was driving on Flamingo Road near Palos Verdes Street, documents said. The officer stopped Birdow after she braked suddenly and after the officer noticed a taillight was inoperable.

While speaking with Birdow, the officer noted she was “[slurring] her words and [squinting] her eyes,” documents said. When the officer asked where Birdow was driving from, she said the Aria Resort & Casino. She also told police she had rented the car, though it was unclear how this was possible if she did not have a valid driver’s license.

Birdow told the officer she did not have anything to drink, which the officer did not believe due to Birdow reportedly rocking back and forth and smelling of alcohol, documents said. Birdow then exited the car, grabbed a bar on the front of the officer’s patrol car and “began throwing her body back and forth,” the officer said.

“I then asked Birdow if she was sure that she did not have anything to drink,” the officer wrote in his report. “She paused for a moment, then stated, ‘I’m not drunk.’ Birdow then stated, ‘I had a drink, but I’m not drinking.’”

Birdow was convicted of another felony DUI in 2017. In the case, she was arrested under the name Melissa Gray, documents said. Then-Clark County District Court Judge Elissa Cadish sentenced Birdow to 2-5 years in prison.

Police said Birdow’s license was revoked in 2009. She provided the officer with a Nevada state identification card, the report said. Police have arrested Birdow several times for DUIs since 2009, records said.

Judge Daniel Westmeyer set Birdow’s bail at $20,000 during her initial court appearance on Feb. 2, records said. Because prosecutors had not filed a criminal complaint as of Feb. 5, Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Joe Bonaventure ordered the jail to release Birdow. Her next hearing was scheduled for March 4.
